Spiral Ridge Permaculture
Jennifer Albanese grew up in the suburbs of the city, but has always sought after the small, wild places. Whether it be a small woods surrounded by apartment buildings, a swath of undeveloped land in a neighborhood or a stretch of isolated beach. These are the places she would go to, where her imagination would run wild, or she would find some peace from whatever problem she was facing. Two youth group trips, to hike part of the Appalachian trail, was a turning point for her. She loved being in the wilderness and couldn’t stop dreaming of a life that would help her retain the connection she felt when she was in those mountains. In college, she began to grow plants, seek out natural areas and became drawn to the farming lifestyle, without ever having set foot on a farm!
Now, Jennifer and her husband, Cliff Davis, co-own Spiral Ridge Permaculture, a family run education company, located on their homestead, specializing in permaculture and regenerative farming. Spiral Ridge also serves as a full-scale design firm, that offers consultation, master planning and implementation, in the same specialities. They also own Pig & Leaf Farm, selling organically grown vegetable/fruit crops and craft pork as well as small scale nursery products. Jennifer is also interested in developing a line of body herbal products to use future yields, from the many diverse systems they have in place.
Jennifer began practicing permaculture in 2001, and finally took her permaculture design course in 2007 from the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology and Ecovillage Training Center. Jennifer has been an organic gardening student and practitioner for over 19 years. She has a special interest in soil regeneration and re-mineralization to create ecosystem health and nutrient dense foodShe has a passion for local, in-season, nose-to-tail cooking, ferments and traditional foods. Jennifer worked as a midwife’s apprentice, birth mentor/doula and course organizer, for The Farm Midwifery Center, for many years before running Spiral Ridge full-time. She loves homeschooling, and has mentored others in nature connection, permaculture and gardening at The Farm School.
Jennifer and Cliff are the lead instructors for their 12 day residential Permaculture Design Courses, offered 2-3 times a year, at their learning center. They also offer courses in gardening, earthworks, agroforestry, rainwater harvesting and host guest instructors for speciality classes.
Jennifer has lived and worked on permaculture sites and organic farms in TN, FL, Costa Rica, Illinois and Arkansas. She is currently living on a 50 acre, 9 year old, off-grid farm, in a naturally built home, in middle TN. Spiral Ridge was clear cut, ridge top land with highly eroded soils. Jen and Cliff committed themselves to helping regenerate the land while creating right livelihood for themselves.
The site is now home to food forests, agroforesty systems, organic market gardens, a woodland/pastured animal operation, natural buildings, extensive earthworks systems as so much more.
